Giles Coren reviews Homa, London N16
The waiters were efficient, knowledgeable and thoughtful. And the food… ah yes, the food. Now, I had an excellent artichoke and almond soup, mild and well mannered, and then venison with a juniper sauce on wet polenta, mild again…There was ‘seared N16 smoked salmon’...and there was excellent tagliolini with crab, and peppardelle with porcini… Everything was hot, fresh, delicious and not overpriced.

Newington arrival Homa will brighten up your day. Stoke Newington Church Street is a funny one. It has a reputation as a foodie destination — and on a Saturday night it hums with local people having a fun time supporting local businesses, all to the good. Sometimes, however, the street’s parts seem to subtract to less than their sum. They’re all friendly, but with the possible exception of the Anglo-Asian curry house — and that’s only because they bring you a free sherry to start and a free whisky to finish — no one venue truly transcends.
Then, a few weeks ago, a new contender arrived. At the split-level property that was once home to a grim pizza-and-misery joint, hoardings appeared for a place called Homa, which through font alone seemed to up the ambition. Now it’s open, and the locals have fallen upon it like children on snow.

Great fresh food, relaxed atmosphere. Exactly what Stoke Newington needed- an individual non-ethnic based menu relying on fresh seasonal ingredients. Would return again and again

Newly opened, nicely decorated and an interesting and very well cooked menu. If Homa keep these standards up they could be looking at the title of best place to eat on Church Street.

I’ve been desperately looking for good breakfast options in Islington and Stoke Newington… Homa is the best I have found so far. Lovely, intelligent, light food, nice decor, great coffee…and all within a 5 minute cycle of home. Yee ha!
